AI Assistant Tutorial: How to Crowdsource Challenges with Worked Examples

As technology continues to advance, the integration of artificial intelligence in education is becoming more prevalent. OpenLearning is at the forefront of this shift with the introduction of the AI Assistant.

In this video, Senior Learning Designer Dr. Shaun Thompson explains how to use the OpenLearning AI Assistant Activity Builder and Content Generator to create an activity for a course on Physics 101.

Learning patterns used in this tutorial:

  • Crowdsourced Challenges: Encourage your community to set problem-solving challenges for each other. Each learner then tries out each other's challenges.
  • Worked Example: Provide a problem and walk learners through a step-by-step solution.

Crowdsourced challenges

Crowdsourced challenges in online courses can be a powerful tool for fostering collaboration and problem-solving skills among learners. By encouraging the community to create and share challenges with each other, students not only engage with the material in a more interactive way but also benefit from diverse perspectives and approaches to problem-solving.

In the context of a Physics 101 course, students could come up with challenges related to real-life applications of physics principles, such as calculating the trajectory of a projectile or analysing the forces at play in a specific scenario. This approach not only enhances the learning experience but also promotes a sense of community and collective learning. By incorporating crowdsourced challenges, educators can create a dynamic and interactive learning environment that empowers students to learn from each other and develop critical thinking skills.

Worked examples

Worked examples serve as a guide for students, offering them a structured approach to tackle similar problems on their own. This empowers learners to grasp challenging concepts effectively and build confidence in their problem-solving abilities.

In an online course like Physics 101, incorporating a worked example can be incredibly beneficial for learners. By providing a step-by-step solution to a problem, students can understand the thought process and methodology behind solving complex physics problems. This not only helps in clarifying concepts but also enhances problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities.
